for each xsl rtf
> Can this be done..?

yes or no (depending on whether you think the code below is an answer)

<xsl:variable name="original" select="/"/>
<xsl:for-each
select="exsl:node-set($rtf)/someelement">
...
<xsl:for-each select="$original">
  <!-- using key() here to operate on the document
representing the source XML; not the RTF -->
</xsl:for-each>
...
</xsl:for-each>

XSLT2 will make this much nicer as then you can get rid of exsl:node set and
the for-each and go

<xsl:variable name="original" select="/"/>
<xsl:for-each select="$rtf/someelement">

  <xsl:value-of select="$original/key(....)"/>
</xsl:for-each>
