Note: this infelicity is not very common in absolute terms, but it is also unavoidable by any means other than getting the parser/processor to behave (you can't reliably put those spaces back). And if it's only as common as two elements appearing adjacently in mixed content with only whitespace between, still it's visible -- glaringly so, to the reading eye -- and as you may know, typographers and layout designers are touchy creatures.
