This is nicely put, with the caveat that some of us might like to consider type annotations to be a higher level than an infoset augmented with defaults -- which can, after all, always be considered as "just strings". In either case, it appears to be a semantic hierarchy, as contextual information is brought to bear as you go from bottom to top.
