java html to plain text
By platform independent, I mean some java API that I can call from my
Java code. Sorry about not getting it clear earlier.

w3m does a great job. It has command line -dump option. It is better
than lynx for formatting tables. But it is C code and I cannot use it.

The Lynx idea is way cool, and I always liked Netscape's Save As .txt
well
enough (I should look and see how Moz is doing it), but the OP did say
"platform independent". Much depends on what this means. Another
question
is how easily the resulting text format can be fine tuned (line ends,
indents, inline markup, header formatting etc.) and whether such tuning
is
needed.

Cheers,
Wendell
