  <xsl:choose>
  <xsl:when test="position() mod 2 = 1">
  ...
  <xsl:when>
  <xsl:otherwise>
  ...
  </xsl:otherwise>
  <xsl:choose>

or if you can't use position, you have to count the preceding nodes yourself.
