I needed to know if an exception is thrown by Java code, can you catch it in
xslt without the entire Transformation being terminated ?

Set the xml/string that goes back to the transformation in the 'catch'

String xmlStr = null;
try{
  xmlStr = "<success/>"
} catch (..) {
  xmlStr = "<failure msg='blah blah'/>"
}
