Thanks to Dimitre and Michael for their working examples.
I'm currently using Michael's recursive solution, primarily
because I understood it quicker :-), but kept both solutions
to study.

Judging from the examples, I was barking up the wrong
tree with the attempt to use preceding-sibling....
