A name consists of two parts a local name "html" "ul" etc and a namespace, "http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" If you mis out the namespace in your Xpath it doesn't match, just as if you missed out a leter of the local name. > from the default name space?!?! The XML Namespace recommensation stresses that <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <a:html xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <b:html xmlns:b="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> are all the same thing and so you would not want Xpaths to work with the first one but not the second two. similarly <html> is a different element, html in the null namespace, and that is the element your Xpaths are matching.
