xslt variable node storing
> Any way to store html tags in a variable,

XSLT can not access the tags in the source document or manipulate them
in any way, tags are part of teh lexical information of teh original XMl
file that is thrown away when building the node tree.
However your variable does contain a result tree fragment representing
an a element node with href attribute and a text node child, however
xsl:value-of always generates a string. you want <xsl:copy-of.
