I run both stylesheets in msxml3, saxon and xalan and got the same result
The only exeption was msxml that produced all letters in one line. Both
saxon and xalan produced one letter per line

msxml3:
"A B C D D D B C C C A A A "

saxon and xalan:
"A
B
C
D
D
D
B
C
C
C
A
A
A
"

(...)
