 If you need to use <xsl:key> that XT doesn't support, then write a two-pass where the first pass uses another processor and outputs XML that your XT pass then reads and puts out the control characters. The version of XT supported by Bill Lindsey that I pointed to does implement keys (and other fun stuff like a node-set() extension)....
