I think the best solution to this kind of problem is to do two passes.
First generate the lines, then number them.

And keep in mind that in XSLT 2.0, or in XSLT 1.0 + node-set() extension, the two passes can be executed in a single run.


This is going to be really powerful. And fun to debug.
