I've tried to do something like: <xsl:sort select="$mss//witness[@sigil=name()]/@shortname"/> but this fails. looking at the definition you used for $sigil that was the name() of the current node in the for-each but if you replace $sigsil by name() you'll get the name of the current node at that point in the expression, which is the name of the witness element so it will always be te hstring "witness".
