with the string 'foo bar'. The first matching substring is "foo ". This leaves the string "bar", but the ^ only matches at the actual start of the string, not at the start of the substring-that's-left-after-the-last-match, so it doesn't recognise the word 'bar'. which is why real regexp-replace languages have word boundary meta-characters that match an _empty_ string at a boundary (just as ^ and $ match empty strings at the ends of the buffer) that way you don't need to prematurely take them off the input string. maybe xpath regexp ought to have the same.
