<el x='2' y='3'/> and <el x='2' y='4'/> are they classed as duplicate members of this population? No, even if they the same y attribute. A set of sequences. A set. But a set does not contain duplicates? I suspect me droning on about set theory has made you paranoid. You are partitioning the original sequence so every item has a distinguishing property (its position in the original sequence) so there are no duplicates.
