Surely this for-each is responsible only for doing the *horizontal* layout
of your table?

Maybe you need to link your elements with @displayposition, not position().

	 <xsl:variable name="x" select="@displayposition" />
	[...]
	<xsl:for-each select="$y/*[@displayposition = $x]">
