Previous ones have come up on the list, from SVG through
to plain text etc.

If you are prepared to go back to xt,

http://www.dpawson.co.uk/xsl/sect4/N10301.html shows prior art in viewing.

#4, Steve's updated Microsoft xml viewer I find good.

If its just comments that are causing problems, 
which not identity transform except for comments,
transform them into something odd, 
then use the output processor to word wrap just that element?
Just a thought.
