You gave an accurate description of why it should and does return false. The fact that the 9 characters 3 > 2 > 1 parse as (3 > 2) > 1 using the more or less consistent grammar of Xpath but as (3 > 2) and (2 > 1) using the unspecified and probably unspecifiable grammar of conventional mathematical notation, and so produce different results shouldn't be surprising should it?
