If people think that confusion is unwarranted when they say that "variables of
the same name can be nested, and top-level variables can be overridden in a
template, and in XSLT 2.0 you can get away with redeclaring a variable within
a template even though this is discouraged"  after having just definitively
stated that "a variable can never be changed or declared twice", then they
shouldn't be teaching XSLT.
