You could use xsl:number, which is designed to do exactly this kind of thing, or if you want to avoid xsl:number you could do <xsl:for-each select="//TABLE"> <xs:value-of select="1+count(preceding-sibling::TABLE)"/> </xsl:for-each> or <xsl:for-each select="//DB"> <xsl:for-each select=".//TABLE"> <xs:value-of select="position()"/> </xsl:for-each> </xsl:for-each> or ...
