Try the XPath function number($string) in your XSLT and see if it does what you want. Since it turns any XPath object into a number, the leading zeros won't appear. If you need your number to be a string again (and you need to force it: for most purposes it's unnecessary since XSLT will make the number a string when it's passed and a string argument is required), try string(number($string)). You won't get your leading zeros back.
