Thank you Martin, Jeni, Manish, Richard, and Ken for such a rapid deluge of replies! I appreciate also the comments about changing my conceptual approach to XSL, which I am sure is immature as yet. To be fair, though, most of my XSL isn't as bad as that fragment, that's just the only way I could seem to make part work. Anyway, I'll try not to bother the list too much, I like so solve my own problems. Just that solution was uglier than a dog's breakfast.
