XPath is for querying documents, and the Xalan XPathAPI API works well against any number of documents.

Java code that uses XPath (and therefore a DOM) will not be the most efficient option.  SAX or just plain string or stream operations will be the most efficient.

What are your particular requirements?  Using XSLT for this sort of thing is really a pretty good idea...
