<xsl:for-each select="document($FileA)//*"> That will iterate over every element in the document for each one the body of teh loop will be executed with the current node (.) will be the element in question. However your body does not use . or have any relative paths. It is as if you have <xsl:for-each select="document($FileA)//*"> 5 </xsl:for-each> you just get "5" repeated once for each element. You want perhaps <xsl:for-each select="document($FileA)//*"> <xsl:value-of select="@type"/> <xsl:value-of select="@name"/> <xsl:value-of select="@id"/> </xsl:for-each> which would give the values of those three attributes for each element.
