Thanks - I've received other pointers to that one. It may serve as a
starting point should I attempt to create the functionality I was looking
for.

Norm Walsh did one -- see http://nwalsh.com/xml/xslint/ -- though from
the documentation it doesn't catch the errors that you highlighted in
your message.
