Hi Kit, don't know about Xalan parameters, sorry. In the first case what's happening is that the * in parent[child=*] actually means ./* - ie any child node, so of course it works. But if you rewrite parent[child/grandchild=*] as parent[child/grandchild=./*] then you can see pretty quick why it's not working.
