The error says that "[t]he markup in the document preceding the root element must be well-formed." There are three things that can precede the root element of an XML document: the XML declaration, comments and processing instructions. That certainly limits the possibilities. [snip!] Xml file looks something like this: <<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?> <?xml-stylesheet type='text/xsl' href='../810_005.xsl'?> <document id="12345"> <TABLE > <TABLE_TITLE> Table Title </TABLE_TITLE> <ROWS> <cell X="0" Y="0"/> <cell X="0" Y="1">T1op</cell> <cell X="0" Y="2">T2el</cell> </ROWS> </TABLE> </document> [snip!] If the XML file looks something like that, then I would say that the XML declaration is not well-formed (two leading < characters). If you are not familiar, the root element, a.k.a. the document element, is the topmost element in the XML document, in this case the <document> element.
