<xsl:when test="ancestor::smallbox">

tests whether the context node has an ancestor called <smallbox>.

Another approach is to write separate template rules for <link>s depending
on whether they are descendants of a smallbox:

<xsl:template match="link">...

<xsl:template match="smallbox//link">...
