Thanks to everyone who responded to my previous question.  The answers 
clarified XPath behavior for me some, and allowed me to rewrite my parser, 
shrinking the code by half and speeding it up.  I'm still struggling with 
aspects of it, particularly WRT efficiency, but I think I'll make it.
