Ah.  In case it's not clear, then, you could do:

tag1/tag2[@attrib1='fads']/tag3[@attrib2='ahf']/*[name()='tag4' or
    (name()='tag5' and not(preceding-sibling::tag5) and attrib3='gf' and
    tag6/@attrib4='flk'])/@attrib5

Kind of gross, and it may make your storage problems a little more 
complicated, but it ought to work.
