I think the character will always be a subscript.

Do they all follow the same pattern? If $char is the character, do you
always want:

  <fo:inline baseline-shift="sub" font-size="6px">
    <xsl:value-of select="$char" />
  </fo:inline>

or might the different characters be substituted for different things?
