I don't think that's quite what he is after, though. Is this conversion supposed to produce an actual character in the output given the ascii code number? Is it supposed to give the hex value given a decimal value? Is it supposed to give a numerical decimal code value (like "32") given some one character in PCDATA element content? Or does he want, as you suggest, an xml style character reference?
