You can also throw away just the line feeds by massaging your template matching text nodes: <xsl:template match="text()"> <xsl:value-of select="translate(., ' ', '')"/> </xsl:template> and to limit the behavior only to certain elements, matching on "name/text()", etc. But I don't think that's as good an option as the xsl:strip-space, since space characters (#32) may still be floating around.
