What about the differences between using Saxon and XT?

Does it depend on the parser whether the XML ends in 'carriagereturn,
linefeed' or 'linefeed' only?

No, it's a Notepad issue.  Notepad doesn't know how to deal with text files
whose lines end in linefeed only, as XML files always do; it's expecting
carriagereturn, linefeed.  Those other editors can deal with them.
Conclusion s/b obvious: don't use Notepad.
