SMIL is in XML format so one can manipulate it using XSLT.

<xsl:output/> 's ability to generate a media type is more of a passive
thing, if u are expecting IE  or GRINS to do something because you have said
'this is application/smil' u will have to fiddle about.

BTW i would suggest using SMIL 2.0 and grins browser at the moment.
