Up to this point your description didn't use any variables at all, just Xpaths to compare two different elements in your input, plus position() to generate some numbers. You can't in XSL "leave" some processing context and return theire later so there is no need to remember any state using variables as you would in a procedural language. If you gave some indication of a (simplified) output you expected from that input, it might help.
