i use <xsl:copy-of select='current()'/> all the time. This copies (from my understanding) the current node and does not traverse down the node list as xsl:copy would....forgive me if i'm wrong but i'm almost certain i saw this today (use google to search for it), I do use it with Xalan 2 (latest version) and it works a treat, i've just cut and paste that line above from my .XSL file btw..
