I'd suggest a couple:

<xsl:sort> where the sort expression is not dependent on the context node,
for example
<xsl:sort select="$param"/>

<xsl:for-each select="item">
   <xsl:value-of select="item"/>

Trouble is, of course, it might just be correct.
