replacing in xml
You can use the dpawson code, but you can also use '+' to represent spaces
in URLs.  Example

XML:

<root>
	<sometext>Big fish</sometext>
</root>

XSL:

<xsl:template match="root">
	<a href="{translate(sometext,' ','+')}">A link</a>
</xsl:template>

This will work just as well as %20. For other special characters it's
probably better to use dpawson's code.
