try again. A[ B[@NM = "case1"]/text() = A[B[@NM = "case3"]/text()] ] So that selects A nodes for which the filter is true. B[@NM = "case1"]/text() is the node set of three text nodes { " " , " " , " --- " } but in the right hand side you have the path A which looks for A children of the current A node. I'm not sure quite what you intended, either . or ../A presumably.
