Aren't Chinese characters valid in XML? (That was the original question's context.) Your book on p.62 says that any Unicode character between #x21 and #xD7FF or between #xE000 and #xFFFD is an acceptable character. So it seems to me that outputting Chinese characters should work, if you write #x3C5D or whatever the correct Unicode representation might be.
