> Can't the namespace axis be used for this purpose? perhaps, but remember that the namespace axis is in scope namespaces not namespaces declared on that element so in <a:x xmlns:a="xxx" xmlns:b="yyyy"> <a:x/> </a:x> then both occurrences of the element with local name x are in the namespace xxx and both have three namespace nodes, with names xml a and b, and values http://www.w3.org/XML/1998/namespace, xxx and yyyy respectively.
