It can have different positions in the _same_ node set, by default the current node list generated from a node set consists of the nodes in document order, but that can be varied, eg with xsl:sort. <xsl:for-each select="$x"> and <xsl:for-each select="$x"> <xsl:sort selct="foo"> iterate over the same node set, $x, but produce a different current node list (and so position() of each node will be different in th etwo cases).
