You might want to take a look at the Muenchian grouping method, which
is described at
http://www.jenitennison.com/xslt/grouping/muenchian.html.  This gives
you a way of getting uniquely-valued nodes fairly quickly and, well,
not exactly easily, but not impossibly! :)
