But what you ask for is an undefined random output, as the templates for the various elements may be executed in any order, or concurrently and needn't be executed in the same order if the same file is processed again. You can of course preserve the state by passing the number as a parameter in every apply-templates and declaring it as a parameter to every template, but this is rarely the best way of tackling a problem.
