do you _really_ want to do that? Search the entire document for all the
next batch of messages? (maybe you do, but usually it's possible to limit
the search to something a bit more specific than //)

In any case the answer to your question is to use a parameter
something like


<xsl:template match = "Message">
 <xsl:param name="x"/>
<tr class="{$x}">
<td>
</td>
</tr>
<xsl:apply-templates select = "//Message[ParentMessageID = '$MID']">
  <xsl:with-param name="x">
    <xsl:choose>
       <xsl:when test="$x='red'>yellow</xsl:when>
       <xsl:otherwise>red</xsl:otherwise>
     </xsl:chose>
  </xsl:with-param>
</xsl:apply-templates>
