RE: Templates for attributes?

Try defining template rules that apply to the attributes, e.g.
<xsl:template match="@title">

rather than to elements carrying those attributes, which is what
match="*[@title]" achieves.

To invoke these templates, use <xsl:apply-templates select="@*"/> on the
parent element.
