Juergen, just in case nobody more knowledgable responds...I found the following approach worked. I have to confess to not having a deep knowledge of why. <LINE> <xsl:value-of select="../parent::node()/@name"/> <xsl:text>.setBackground(new <xsl:text>java.awt.Color(</xsl:text> <xsl:value-of select="color/@red"/> <xsl:text>,</xsl:text><xsl:value-of select="color/@green"/>, <xsl:text>,</xsl:text></xsl:text><xsl:value-of select="color/@blue"/> <xsl:text>));
</xsl:text> </LINE> With output method="text" the <LINE> element is not written out. I have no doubt that there may be more readable/concise ways to do this, but just in case nobody else responds, I found this approach to work for me.
