I suggest that instead of doing <xsl:copy select="@*"> you do
<xsl:apply-templates select="@*">, you can then write a default template
that copies the attribute thus:
 
<xsl:template match="@*"><xsl:copy/></xsl:template>

and other templates that modify specific attributes as required, e.g.

<xsl:template match="@desc">
<xsl:attribute name="desc">
  <xsl:value-of select="normalize-space(.)"/>
</xsl:attribute>
</xsl:template>
