Humblest apologies, I feel I may have been doing you a disservice (albeit
with the help of "XALAN Version 1.1D01 XML4J Version Xerces 1.1.1").

I had a suspicion that XALAN was greedy with memory for the key() solution
so switched to saxon to try it out. I was initially annoyed because I
thought Saxon had crashed without issuing an error message, until I noticed
that it had actually completed succesfully. I revisited your merge
stylesheets with the 800 node example and found that Saxon executed it
within a matter of some 30 seconds (an improvement on 30mins!).

Needless to say, I've now switched to Saxon.

Apologies once again,

Tom Mullen
